Every individual matters, every individual has a role to play, every individual makes a difference – Dr. Goodall

Seeing small children play in muddy boots and clothes, a research student of Forest and Nature conservation, asked herself two questions, “would these natural playgrounds create a bond between children and nature, like the forest did in my childhood?” And if so, “would this contribute to the development of a nature supportive society?”. This was after she moved to Amsterdam from a small village in Netherlands assuming that the city was without nature.

During this research she came across a book by Dr. Goodall from which the above quote is taken. The book is about chimpanzees and people’s awareness of the natural world around them. We cannot help but agree with the fact that when people realise the importance of nature, they will care for and support it. Every individual child that gets the opportunity to connect with nature might become one extra person with a careful attitude towards nature.

Contact of children and nature has decreased over the years, however research has shown that real nature experiences have positive effects on children’s health and well being. This is also true the other way round, which is having a positive effect on nature.
